WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Every year United plants hundreds of trees in its communities. Our Tree Planting Program has the following guidelines:
  • Trees will be planted in the FRONT YARD ONLY, no exceptions. Trees will not be dropped off for you to plant.
  • If you do not want the trees provided or there is not sufficient space in your front yard, we do not offer others in replacement or give cash in lieu of trees.
  • If your yard has been recently sodded (within two weeks of receiving this letter) or if you plan to sod soon please inform Prestige Landscape Group at the time you place your order. They will schedule planting accordingly.

PLANTING PROCEDURE:

Once it has been verified that the final grading and loaming of your lot has been completed you will receive this letter. Please order your choice of tree with our contractor, Prestige Landscape Group.

Prestige Landscape Group will make arrangements with Alberta 1 Call to have the underground utilities located in your front yard. A stake will be positioned in an appropriate location based on The City of Calgary planting regulations. The City requires trees to be planted outside of the Right of Way (ROW). Please refer to your plot plan or Real Property Report and you will notice the setback indicated from the Property PIN, then the ROW.

The homeowner is responsible for locating any private irrigation or electrical systems on the yard. If no trees are desired, please notify Prestige Landscape Group of your decision.

Planting proceeds with truckload quantities and weather permitting, as soon as possible, once selections are received. Our contractor is Prestige Landscape Group.

Please place your order online at www.plgroup.ca. Click on “Your New Tree” and follow the instructions or call 280-5400.

CARE OF NEW PLANT MATERIAL:

TREES THAT DO NOT SURVIVE WILL NOT BE REPLACED, SO PLEASE WATER AS FOLLOWS:
  • First Month - Every Day
  • Second Month - Three to Four Times a Week
  • Balance of the Season - Once Per Week
  • In All Cases - Apply 10 Gallons of Water

Building a water-smart community: The PEER Program

Canadians use a lot of water.  We take showers, brush our teeth, use the toilet, do the dishes and water the lawn. It all adds up.  In fact, each one of use uses about 3.4 million drops (335 litres) of water a day*!

That's not just a drop in the bucket.  In Southern Alberta, where our water supply is dependent on a variable mountain snowpack and meltwater from shrinking glaciers, conservation has become an important issue.  Building sustainable, water-smart communities, is part of the solution.

United Communities and our builder partners are proud to introduce the Purchaser Environmental Education and Review (PEER) Program.
When you buy a new home, a wide range of water conservation features are built right in, including low flow toilets and showerheads, and Energy Star appliances.  It also means that the design of your community, from the way the streets are engineered to landscaping choices for common areas, is aimed at conserving water.

As a new homeowner you will have some responsibilities too.  Your builder will turn over a home that is efficient at conserving water; it will be up to you to maintain it.  You'll also be asked to ensure that any landscaping you do, including the plants you choose, is low water use.  This is a practice called xeriscaping. United Communities will provide each homeowner with a rainwater collection barrel and outdoor tap timer.

10 Ways to Save Water

1. Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or garden, or cleaning.

2. Verify that your homeis leak-free, because many homes have hidden water leaks.  Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used.  If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.

3. Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers.  If your faucet is dripping at the rate of one drop per second, you can expect to waste 2,700 gallons per yeaar which will add to the cost of water and sewer utilities, or strain your septic system.

4. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.  Dispose of tissues, insects and other such water in the trash rather than the toilet.

5.  Take shorter showers.  Replace your showerhead with an ultra-low flow version. Some units are available that allow you to cut off the flow without adjusting the water temperature knobs.

6. Don't let water run while shaving or washing your face.  Brush your teeth first while waiting for water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin.

7.  Use the minimum amount of water needed for a bath by closing the drain first and filling the tub only 1/3 full.  Stopper tub before turning water.  The initial burst of cold water can be warmed by adding hot water later.

8. Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded or properly set the water level for the size of the load you are using.

9. When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink or basin with soapy water.  Quickly rinse under a slow-moving stream from the faucet.

10. Store drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap run every time you want a cool class of water.
